I got to play the part of "Al" in "A Chorus Line" (Directed by Barb Mah, Choreographed by Sharon Richardson) in September 2004. The show was a great challenge for me since I have no formal dance training in jazz or tap (I just move well). Rehearsals started quite early - April of 2004, so that gave me and my fellow cast members enough time to get ready for the show. Needless to say all of our performances were sold out. It was a great experience.
I am currently working on a show called "The King and I" in which I will be playing "Lun Tha", who is the romatic lead in this musical. Two of my most favourite songs come from this show - "We Kiss In A Shadow" and "I Have Dreamed" are from this musical. Check out "The King and I"section of my site.
In productions of a local theatre group in Edmonton called Musicalmania! I have portrayed three major characters, in three of their original productions written and composed by C.W.Oxley.
The first one was the title role of "Louis David Riel". This role was inspiring because of all that Louis Riel overcame throughout his short life. My greatest challenge with this role was portraying a man with such a great vision. For those who are interested in finding out more information about this famous Canadian, go to the following website library.usask.ca/northwest/background/riel.htm.
The second was as "Archdeacon Frollo" in "Notre Dame of Paris... the dramatic musical". This was a musical based on the novel "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" by Victor Hugo. This role was challenging for me as it was my first time playing a villain. His obssesion with Esmeralda was beyond anything that I could ever have imagined. This became evident even during the first few rehearsals.
The third, and easily my favorite character, I was honoured to portray, was "Che Guevarra" in the musical "!Che! The South American Rebel". This was an excellent opportunity for me to show the world (or at least the audience in Edmonton) the incredible range of emotions and actor can go through on stage. From flirtation, love, anger, passion, hatred and confusion, to a complete break down in the most literal sense. Crying on stage is one of most difficult emotions to do. One of my most memorable moments on stage was singing "Saddest Song". The refrain still rings in my head...
"But there were times like this before and I pulled through,
times I thought each breath would be my last.
And I feel my strenght returned when I'm with you
all my misery's a thing out of the past
if only I could make these moments last."
[(c)(written and composed by C.W.Oxley)]
I have had the chance to perform with, and learn from, such great performers as Jessica Ostrikoff, Diana Stabel, Lindsay Thomas, Colin Maclean, and many so many more during my time with the Edmonton Musical Theatre. As well as the pleasure of working with Steffni Ault, Brad Heintzman and Sandra Beggs - who have become like family. Under Dr. Dasha Goody's careful hand I started to develop my passion for musical theatre. Dr. Dasha Goody was an inspiration to me. Her ability to see talent, and finding that talent in me, was what kept me in Edmonton. She believed in me, in my talents, and this I will never forget... without her love and guidance, I would not be who I am or where I am today. Thank you Dasha, I will always remember you.
